Worth knowing

  • Chester’s city walls were begun by the Romans (fortress of Deva Victrix, AD 70 to 80) and today form an almost complete circuit of the medieval city.
  • Chester Racecourse (the Roodee) is recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest racecourse still in operation, with racing from 1539; the course says it sits beside the River Dee a short walk from the city centre.
  • On Chester race days New Crane Street, Watergate Street and Nuns Road are closed with barriers from 09:00 to 21:00, so drop-offs need planning.
  • The Chester Rows are covered first-floor walkways along the four main streets, with shops behind them.
  • Chester Zoo opened in 1931 and is one of the UK’s largest zoos at 51 hectares.
